This was supposed to be quick and cathartic painting, but AGHHGHGH IT'S MAKING ME THINK OF THEM AGAIN!
Acrylic on canvas
Anyway... this is what I was scared of, from the time I was three to the time I was about eight. These were NOT boogeymen or monsters under my bed. I didn't believe in those. These ghost things followed me around. They went everywhere with me. I was scared I'd see them when I closed my eyes. I used to have sleep paralysis when I was a kid, and several times I saw these guys. That was the scariest thing ever, knowing that I was lying there with my eyes open, but I saw these things and couldn't do anything about it. When I tried to close my eyes, they'd just open up again and I'd be forced to look at these ghost things. I was literally terrified of them, and now that I think back on it I probably was so scared that I stressed myself out to the point of hallucinations. My parents didn't get it.
I mean, clearly these were just figments of my imagination, but to me they were so real, despite how simple and cartoony they were.
Has the sleep paralysis stopped now that you're older? I can't imagine what it'd be like to have that that often, and with visual hallucinations...It's only happened to me once, and I heard something talking to me, and that was frightening enough. D:
Yeah... sleep paralysis and sleepwalking are more common in young kids, and it usually goes away. I used to do both. D:
Usually when I had sleep paralysis, I would see either the ghost things or lines of bugs crawling EVERYWHERE. A line of ants here, tarantulas there, cockroaches on the ceiling... they would be crawling over everything, including me. But the ghosts were the ones that bothered me, because they seemed to be trying to directly interact with me (getting close, disappearing, then popping up right next to my face), while the bugs were just walking in straight lines and not caring.
But most people have seen some dark shape out of the corner of their eye... I'm sure that would freak out a little kid and manifest itself in a hallucination.
These were more than dark shadows... they were solid blobs of black with the stripey eyes and yellow jagged mouths, haha.

Give a man a fish...and he will be fed for one day.
But...teach a man to fish...
And he will be mad that you stopped giving him fish!
